Task 1 – Hayley Collins
I thought entering high school would be so much fun, and I was right!
During my first 2 weeks of year 7 at Reddam House we went on our orientation camp. Our camp was at Cataract Scout Park, and we were there for 3 days.
The most exciting things I participated in were the Giant Swing, the Flying Fox and Caving.
As my group walked over to the giant swing, I began to realise how big and huge it looked. As I looked up at the giant swing, I thought to myself, ‘I will never EVER do this!’ but I guess I thought wrong. . . I watched all of my friends swing back and forth, screaming with excitement. It was getting towards the end of our time there, and I still didn’t want to do it. “Hayley, you have to have a go, it’s so much fun!” said our instructor, “Mmm okay. . .” I said even though I was still a bit worried about doing it. . . I went up to the ladder and climbed it and I got strapped in. By this point I was beginning to think this is going to be fun! As I was getting pulled up to the top, I was panicking. When I got to the top, I was shouting “I don’t want to do this!” but there was no way out. The instructor said “The only way down is to pull the rope.” And without thinking, I grabbed it and pulled it, and there was the ride. . . WHOOOSH!!
The Flying Fox was really similar to the giant swing, but this time I screamed A LOT louder than before. Even the people at the giant swing could hear me screaming! Luckily I wasn’t the only one who screamed - even if I was the loudest. . .
Caving was my favourite out of all of them. The caves were dark, dusty, full of bugs, small and boiling hot! I was beginning to feel a bit claustrophobic. We had to crawl and climb and squeeze through the tiny gaps, I was surprised I didn’t get stuck! People could leave through the exit doors if they felt like they couldn’t continue. Quite a few people left during the activity and I didn’t blame them, it was really really hot in the cave.
I had so much fun and made lots of new friends! Camp was good because we all had to work together and share the experiences. The teachers that came a long made everything as fun as they could, and I think they had just as much fun as we did!
I looked forward to going back to school after camp because I had met everyone and gotten to know some of the people and teachers a lot better. I’ll never forget the experiences I had when I went on camp, and I’m looking forward to the year 8,9,10 and 11 camps.
